(Football News) According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur has rejected Bayern Munich’s bid of €80 million plus add-ons for Harry Kane. This marks the second unsuccessful proposal from the Bavarian club, as a €70 million offer was turned down a week earlier.
Harry Kane, whose contract is set to expire next summer, is rumored to be interested in a move to Munich. However, negotiations with Spurs have proven challenging due to the reluctance of club chairman Daniel Levy to allow their star striker to depart without a significant financial return.
Following a board reshuffle in May that granted Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel increased influence over transfer decisions, he perceives the acquisition of Harry Kane as the ideal solution to the club’s issues. Last summer, Bayern Munich, under former coach Julian Nagelsmann, opted to adopt a new system after selling Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona.
Rather than relying on a traditional number 9, the team transitioned to a fluid front four. Although this approach initially showed promise, Nagelsmann eventually reverted to utilizing Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, the backup striker who was 33 years old at the time, as the focal point of Bayern’s attack.
With Nagelsmann departing and Tuchel assuming charge, securing a new striker becomes a paramount objective for Bayern during the summer transfer window. While Victor Osimhen was considered too costly and Randal Kolo Muani did not match the desired player profile sought by Bayern, characterized by a physical presence in the penalty box, Dusan Vlahovic failed to impress the club’s hierarchy.
Harry Kane possesses the ideal attributes that match Bayern Munich’s requirements. Standing at 1.88 meters tall, he brings a strong presence to the penalty box, making him an excellent target for crosses delivered by Bayern’s wingers and full-backs. This becomes particularly significant for Bayern, who frequently encounter Bundesliga opponents adopting deep defensive formations, where having such a player becomes crucial for breaking down low blocks.
Throughout the season, Bayern has faced difficulties against such opponents due to the absence of a clear target in the box. Additionally, Kane’s versatility as a playmaker adds another dimension to his game. He often drops deep to assist in building up play, a skill he has showcased effectively in his prolific partnership with Son Heung-min at Tottenham. This ability will be instrumental in exploiting the pace of Bayern’s wingers during counter-attacks.
Amidst a market filled with striking options, Harry Kane stands out as the most proven choice. At 29 years old (soon turning 30 in late July), he boasts an impressive record in the Premier League with 320 appearances, scoring 213 goals, and providing 50 assists. Kane not only holds the title of Tottenham’s all-time leading goal scorer but also ranks as the second highest goal scorer in Premier League history, only 47 goals shy of Alan Shearer’s record.
In addition, Harry Kane has netted 58 goals in 84 appearances for the England senior national team.
Trophies have remained elusive for Harry Kane during his time at Spurs. Despite spending 10 seasons at the club, he has not secured a major trophy. The desire to win silverware is likely to tempt him into seeking a move to Germany. Joining Bayern would place Kane in a team favored to win both the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal, with the quality and depth to compete for the Champions League as well.
Although approaching 30, recent seasons have shown that elite strikers can continue to excel past this milestone. Players like Robert Lewandowski, who at 34 years old has consistently scored impressive goal tallies of 33, 50, 48, and 55 over the past four seasons, serve as examples. Karim Benzema further supports the notion that top strikers can maintain their goal-scoring prowess well into their 30s. The pairing of Harry Kane and Bayern Munich appears to be a perfect match, although the financial aspect remains a consideration.
Despite strong interest, Tottenham is determined to retain their cherished striker. According to The Telegraph, the club is offering Kane a new contract worth €468,000 per week as his current deal expires next summer. A meeting with new head coach Ange Postecoglou is scheduled in an attempt to persuade Kane to extend his stay in London. However, Sport1 suggests that Kane is inclined to leave Spurs and may not sign a new contract even if a move to Bayern does not materialize this summer. In such a scenario, it seems that Bayern and Kane have an understanding to secure the player on a free transfer next summer.
Tottenham prefers to sell Harry Kane to a foreign club rather than one of their domestic rivals. However, Bayern Munich, known for being cautious with their spending, are unwilling to exceed €100 million for his transfer. At Saebener Strasse, there is a sense that Spurs will eventually relent and accept the current offer. Negotiations are anticipated to extend into August as Bayern Munich seeks to address the significant void in their lineup by securing the services of Harry Kane.
