Roma needed extra time to beat Feyenoord in a pulsating encounter

AS Roma beat Feyenoord 4-2 on aggregate to set up a semi final encounter with Bayer Leverkusen

(Football news) Stephan El Shaarawy and Lorenzo Pellegrini both scored in extra time as they made sure that Roma qualify for the semi-finals in the Europa League semi finals after they beat the Dutch leaders Feyenoord 4-1 on Thursday for a 4-2 aggregate win. El Shaarawy was the first to score in extra time as he converted a cross from Tammy Abraham after 101 minutes and Pellegrini put the final nail in the coffin when he sealed the win seven minutes later after he scored on a rebound from an Abraham shot.

Feyenoord had won the first leg 1-0 as Roma from the start of the match pushed for the opening goal as they missing two easy opportunities in the first 10 minutes.The visitors slowly but steadily got involved in the match, with Rui Patricio forced to deny Sebastian Szymanski from close range. After half-time, Roma had the best chance of the match after an excellent cross found Pellegrini at the near post but his shot subsequently hit the post.

On the hour mark, the silent Stadio Olimpico finally had a moment to celebrate when Leonardo Spinazzola took advantage of a deflection in the penalty box as he poked the ball into the goal. Jose Mourinho started Paulo Dybala and Abraham on the bench, they suffered injuries in the first leg but he sent them on to find a winner.

In the 80th minute, Igor Paixao headed in an equaliser for the visitors, which stunned the host, he was left unmarked inside the box as he headed in from a cross by Szymanski. The World Cup winner Paulo Dybala levelled scores on aggregate one minute before stoppage time with a brilliant shot from a very tricky angle. Santiago Gimenez received a straight red card after a dangerous knee-high tackle on Gianluca Mancini, which meant that Feyenoord played the entire extra time with 10 men. Roma will face Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinals after the German side won 5-2 on aggregate against Union Saint-Gilloise
