(Football news) No Manchester United fan could have imagined that when they won their 20th title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season, they would have to wait more than 10 years to win it again. Fast forward to the present day and there have been five different permanent managers, two chief executives, £1.43bn spent on transfers, £40m on managers and a debt of nearly £1bn. What do they have to show for it? Absolutely nothing.
Manchester United isn’t an ordinary football club, it’s an institution and arguably the most famous club in the world, but they have suffered a serious identity crisis and haven’t really recovered from it. Depending on your club allegiance, Manchester United’s story will either make you feel happy about their downfall or disappointed at how far the mighty have fallen. Whatever it may be, the Glazer ownership combined with Manchester United’s decade long woes is nothing short of tragic.
One of the key issues during the last decade has been the lack of a clear transfer strategy, which has resulted in a lot of money being spent on underperforming players. Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United have signed players like Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Matteo Damian, Alexis Sanchez, Marcos Rojo and Juan Mata amongst others, who have failed to justify their move to Old Trafford.
However, it finally looks like things are turning around for Manchester United with Erik ten Hag at the helm. Currently third on the league table, Manchester United remain in the FA Cup and the Europa League. He has dealt with the Cristiano Ronaldo situation brilliantly and has got the best out of Marcus Rashford. Most importantly, his signings such as Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez have fit into his system flawlessly. While it’s far from perfect, there has definitely been progress under the Dutchman with silverware to show for it.
The Glazer family are now looking for minority investment or a complete takeover of Manchester United and it definitely seems like a situation that’s desperately needed. Both Old Trafford and Carrington are far from being the best in class for top flight football and getting a new owner, especially if it is Sheikh Jassim from Qatar could finally bring Manchester United to the summit of world football once again.
