Real Madrid look to protect 2-0 lead away at Chelsea

Real Madrid aim to qualify for their 11th out of 13 semi finals since 2010
Real Madrid

(Football news) A week ago Real Madrid put in a solid performance at the Santiago Bernabéu to take a 2-0 first leg lead against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. Now Los Blancos will look to get the job done and get over the line at Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid on the weekend got a 2-0 win away at Cadiz where Carlo Ancelotti rested the majority of his key players.

Real Madrid have played 11 out of 13 Champions League semi finals since 2010 and now they will be looking for a 12th one which is very impressive even by their very high standards. Chelsea on the other hand will need to play out of their skin as they have lost 4 and drawn 2 of their last 6 games.

Toni Kroos and Vinicius Jr missed the game against Cadiz due to muscle overloads but the pair should be back in the starting line-up. Left back Ferland Mendy remains the only absentee as Eduardo Camavinga is once again likely to fill in that position.

Chelsea on the other hand are still missing Armando Broja while Kai Havertz, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Carney Chukwuemeka are all doubts. Kalidou Koulibaly picked up an injury at the Bernabéu and is out of contention while Ben Chilwell is suspended after his red card in the return leg.

The big issue for Chelsea is that Real Madrid managed to win convincingly despite not playing at their level best. Last week Reece James was completely outplayed by Vinicius Jr who has done that to many world class right backs.

Keeping the Brazilian quiet will be the first step for Chelsea. The bottom line is that the blues need 2 goals which is difficult to imagine as they have scored only 13 goals in 2023. If Chelsea do manage to pull off a comeback that too against Real Madrid then it will be a legendary moment in football history.
