(Football news) Sergio Ramos in an emotional and somewhat angry statement announced his retirement from the Spanish national team. In 2020 Ramos’ international career was flying as he was the captain of the team and became the highest appearance maker in the history of Spain. The defender was the captain of the side and had the full trust of Luis Enrique. However in 2021 Sergio Ramos suffered a number of injuries and was subsequently left out of the squad for the Euros as Luis Enrique said that Ramos hadn’t trained or played enough games with Real Madrid.
In 2021, Sergio Ramos joined PSG and his injury issues continued. However the tide changed in 2022 as Ramos recovered and started playing more. He soon became like the Ramos of old but Luis Enrique still didn’t call him up for the World Cup. After Spain’s Round of 16 exit, Luis Enrique was sacked and replaced by Luis de la Fuente. Ramos at the age of 36 is still playing at the highest level with PSG but according to Sergio Ramos’ statemen,t De le Fuente told the defender that he will not be called up. The manager has apparently told Ramos that his performances at club level will not change his decision.
Sergio Ramos expressed disappointment as he is solely dropped because of his age. The defender went on to say that he always hoped that he would leave by his decision or because of his performances which isn’t the case. He also said that he is envious of his teammates Pepe, Luka Modric and Lionel Messi who despite being old continue to play for their national teams. The decision of De la Fuente is a bizarre one because if Ramos is playing well then he will bring a lot to the table. The message from the manager is clear that he wants to freshen things up and trust the youngsters.
Sergio Ramos is a legend of Spanish football, having won 2 Euros and 1 World Cup with them. He made 180 appearances with La Roja which is more than anyone else. He was always a key player for Spain who led from the front. Things could’ve been different had Luis Enrique selected him for the World Cup. Even though the end isn’t ideal, Ramos’ international career has been a roaring success. Only time will tell whether Luis de la Fuente’s decision is the correct one but it is a bold one for sure. Spain will be hoping for a better show in the Euros next year under a new manager.
