(Football news) Borussia Dortmund have strengthened their options at full-back as they signed Norway international Julian Ryerson from Union Berlin. Ryerson made 21 appearances across three competitions for Union Berlin this season before moving to Dortmund on a three-and-a-half-year-deal till the summer of 2026. The 25-year-old arrives and provides some very important cover in the full back positions, with the Norway international capable of playing on both the flanks.
Ryerson made 109 appearances across a four-and-a-half years in which he helped his side gain promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time and subsequently helped them qualify for Europe as well. With right-back Thomas Meunier out with a long term injury, Ryerson now will go straight into the starting line-up for Dortmund’s first Bundesliga match of 2023 against Augsburg. Ryerson’s signing came as a complete shock as the deal was quickly completed after they found out that Belgium international Thomas Meunier’s injury will possibly keep him out for the next six weeks.
He was born in Lyngdal in 1997 and played most of his youth football with Lyngdal IL. He made a move to Viking Fotballklubb in 2013 and he impressed Union Berlin during his time with the Norwegian club and was subsequently signed in 2018. At Union, he became a defensive mainstay for the club, putting in performances that have got Dortmund to bring him in on short notice to help stabilize their shaky defense. His ability to play both in a back three and back four will give Terzic the tactical flexibility, making it easier for him to set the team up in a variety of ways. .
“We need defensive stability for the challenges that await us,” said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “Julian Ryerson is an intelligent and aggressive defender, in a good way. He can play on either side of the back four and in a back three. We’re very happy to have made the transfer happen so quickly.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision for me to leave Union because I have so much to thank this special club, my teammates, colleagues and fans for,” Ryerson explained. “I only have fond memories of my time at the Alten Försterei, but now I’m looking forward to a new chapter at Borussia Dortmund and helping the club realise their objectives in the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Cup. As an opponent, I’ve always been impressed with the atmosphere at the Signal Iduna Park. Now I’m looking forward to playing with the famous Yellow Wall behind me.”
