(Football news) Premier League had appointed a five-person independent panel to conduct weekly review of Key Match Incidents (KMI) for all top flight games. The panel has gone through a number of incidents and have identified 48 situations when VAR needed to get involved, with 42 correct decisions made.
However, they have also identified six situations where VAR got it completely wrong and another six on-field decisions that were overturned by VAR even though they were correct. This initiative has been introduced to improve refereeing standards with chief refereeing officer Howard Webb at the helm.
The Premier League is also considering the introduction of concussion substitutions despite the controversy surrounding it. The Professional Footballers Association has asked for temporary substitutions to be allowed in October and Premier League doctors have reiterated that the move will bring positive benefits.
The Premier League, along with France’s Ligue 1 and North America’s MLS have written a letter to the game’s rule-making body, Ifab, through the World Leagues Forum, to say that they are willing to be part of a trial session. The World Leagues Forum and Fifpro have also written a letter to Ifab, to ask them to allow the introduction of temporary concussion substitutes. The Premier League will not know Ifab’s decision until March but there is a realistic possibility that the request could be denied. Ifab has always believed that players who are suspected to have suffered from concussion should be replaced completely instead of a temporary substitution.
