(Tennis news) Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu has appointed 30 year old German Sebastian Sachs as her new coach. Sachs guided Belinda Bencic to the Olympic gold last year and is currently with Raducanu in Abu Dhabi, with the 20 year old losing to Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur 5-7 6-3 (10-8) on Friday in an exhibition match. Sachs had a brief career as a player but has enjoyed plenty of success as a coach, helping Bencic break into the top 10, working with Julia Gorges and being a part of Victoria Azarenka’s team.

Sebastian Sachs is Raducanu’s fifth coach in 18 months, having previously worked with Torben Beltz and then Dmitry Tursunov. The former Russian tennis player chose not to continue with Raducanu, despite her improved performances in Wimbledon after publicly speaking about “red flags” and potential problems further down the line if she continued to listen to too many voices.

He said “She’s probably a two-and-a-half-year project. Her game is very raw. It’s going to take some time, but as I said to her and to pretty much everyone on her team, ‘I think you just need to have one voice and just try that for a bit’. I could have stuck around, I could have agreed on everything that her team proposed, but, deep down, I felt like that wasn’t the right thing to do.”

Tursunov is now coaching Belinda Bencic. As for Raducanu, the 20 year old recently began full training after a wrist injury prematurely ended her season. In that time, she has been working with Andy Murray’s former physical trainer Jez Green. She will start her 2023 season in Auckland and will undoubtedly hope to reach the same heights that resulted in a US Open victory last year.
