(Football news) In a shocking turn of events, Bayern Munich signed Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City. The Bavarian club also has a buy option for €70M. The player was reportedly very keen on a move but from Manchester City’s point of view it is surprising that he was allowed to leave. It is difficult for any club to sign a player in January but in the last few days it is almost impossible therefore it is unlikely that City will get a replacement. The signing is a good one for Bayern Munich as Cancelo has been one of the best full backs in the world and can play on either side.

Six months ago Joao Cancelo was undroppable for Manchester City but things went downhill in the World Cup. After starting all the group stage matches, the Portuguese started on the bench for the 2 knockout games. After returning from the World Cup, Cancelo’s game time reduced significantly. It was clear that Pep Guardiola for the time being had started preferring other players. However that is something that Guardiola does a lot and players always find a way back in the team. Up until 3 days ago no one would have predicted a move away from City. The drop in form for Cancelo has been noticeable so he will be looking to revive it in Bavaria.

Manchester City already sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to current title rivals Arsenal and they are surely regretting the decision. Even more so as his replacement Sergio Gomez hasn’t been too impressive. Guardiola has had to start Nathan Ake at left back and the Dutchman hasn’t disappointed. However Cancelo was a player of immense quality who could play at right back and left back. Just a little bit of recovery in form would’ve made the full back undroppable again but there something has happened behind the scenes which has caused the departure.
