What’s next the Indian T20I team after World Cup disappointment

(Cricket news) It was a rather disappointing World Cup for India as they lost by 10 wickets in the semi-final against England. The campaign as a whole was disappointing but in hindsight India were never the favourites to win the Cup and the semifinals was the stage most people would've predicted India to go out. India's bowling was always going to be an issue but the batting has truly been a let down. The next T20 World Cup is in 2 years time and India will definitely have to think ahead and make a few changes to find the winning formula. The selectors have already set the ball rolling as Ravichandran Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik have been dropped from the T20I squad against New Zealand while Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel may have been dropped or rested as they are also not in the squad.

When it comes to batting it is more of an approach that needs to change rather than the personnel. The likes of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya are vastly experienced and successful. These 6 players are likely to continue playing for India in T20Is but their performances need to improve. There are reports which say that the BCCI will leave it for Rohit and Virat to decide whether they want to continue playing T20Is. Looking at Kohli's performance there is no need for him to give up the format. As for Rohit Sharma, even though he has had an underwhelming tournament, he is still a valuable player. The same with KL Rahul but in his case, he will have to perform better in high pressure matches.

It might be time for the T20 side to move on from the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami. It looked like India had moved on from Shami but the injury to Bumrah forced his callback. Young bowlers will need to be backed more as the power of the senior bowling attack is fading. Umran Malik is one player who needs to be given more time because he could turn out to be a match winner for India in the future. Washington Sundar can be looked at as a spin bowling all-rounder and he has already proven that he can do it at the international level. Mohammed Siraj also needs to be given time in this format as he is a quality bowler. It is reported that the senior 3 format players will be prioritising ODIs and Tests for a while which is completely understandable. This will give opportunities to youngsters to get a longer run in the team.
