(Football News) West Ham’s season domestically has been very disappointing as they were in a relegation battle not too long ago. However, in Europe, they have been going strong and now even their domestic form has improved. David Moyes has managed to almost guarantee safety in the Premier League and are now in the driving seat in the Conference League. The Hammers came back from behind to win the home leg against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.
West Ham had a couple of chances to open the scoring but it was Alkmaar who got the first goal. Midfielder Tijani Reijnders scored with a powerful shot from outside the box after being set up by Sven Mijnans in the 41st minute. West Ham goalkeeper Alfonso Areola definitely should have done better as he only palmed it into the back of the net. In the 2nd half, West Ham came out with much more intent as they started to create chances. In the 65th minute, Matthew Ryan tried to punch a floating ball but instead ended up catching Jarrod Bowen on the head.
The referee pointed to the spot and Said Benrahma converted the penalty. 11 minutes later Michail Antonio scored a scrappy goal to give West Ham the lead. The Hammers tried hard to double their lead but the away side managed to hold on. The result takes them closer to a European final which will be a massive achievement. West Ham will play Brentford away from home on the weekend. A win there could guarantee them survival which will also be a massive confidence booster ahead of the 2nd leg.
