Tokyo Olympics – International Olympic Committee confirms spectator limit of 50% for each event

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today confirmed that the organisers of the Tokyo Games have fixed the spectator limits for each event at 50 percent of a venue's total capacity. Besides, the current competition schedule also remains unchanged.

The decision was finalised after a meeting involving local organisers, the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, the Tokyo metropolitan government and national government.

"In light of the government's restrictions on public events, the spectator limit for the Olympic Games will be set at "50 percent of venue capacity, up to a maximum of 10,000 people" at all venues." stated the press release by IOC.

The Japanese organisers have formed guidelines for spectators to ensure safety which stipulate that masks should be worn in venues at all times; prohibition of speaking in a loud voice or shouting, avoiding congestion by means of appropriate announcements and that the visitors should leave venues in a staggered manner.

A framework will also be brought into place to keep monitoring the status of infections and medical care using expert advice.
