Novak Djokovic reaches Wimbledon final after win over Cameron Norrie

(Tennis news) Novak Djokovic remains on course to win his fourth successive Wimbledon trophy after defeating Cameron Norrie 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4. The Serbian hasn’t lost at Centre Court since nine years but endured a scare when Norrie comprehensively took the first set. However, Djokovic showed exactly why he had 26 unbeaten wins on the grass surface by steamrolling his opponent for the remainder of the match. The result meant that Djokovic is now the first man to reach 32 Grand Slam finals and has lost only one of his 19 semi-finals.

In the on-court interview after the match, Djokovic said “I didn't start off well and he was the better player for the first set. In a Grand Slam semi-final, there's always lots of pressure and expectation, Cameron didn't have much to lose and he was playing the tournament of his life. I got a lucky break at 4-3, he kind of gifted me that game, and then the momentum shifted a little bit." A disappointed Norrie said “It was tough. Obviously a big situation for me. Yeah, it was a tough, tough match. Obviously [I] started pretty well. He was a little bit nervous from what I could see. He managed to draw up his arrows and really play solid the last three sets and he made it difficult for me."

Winning the Grand Slam at Wimbledon would most likely be Djokovic’s only opportunity of silverware as he would require a COVID-19 certificate to compete in the US Open. The 20 time Grand Slam winner had a nervy start, much to the delight of the home fans as Norrie comprehensively won the first set against his formidable opponent. Uncharacteristically, Djokovic made a number of unforced errors with his groundstrokes either hitting the net or going long. However, as the match went on Djokovic grew into the game, becoming more of his old self and completely outclassing Norrie to reach the finals where he will face Nick Kyrgios.
