Daniil Medvedev defeats Norrie to win Los Cabos Open title in Mexico

(Tennis news) World Number 1 Daniil Medvedev defeated Cameron Norrie 7-5 6-0 to lift the title in Los Cabos, Mexico ahead of the US Open. Medvedev was forced to miss Wimbledon due to a ban on Russian and Belarusian players due to the invasion of Ukraine and arrived in Mexico for the ATP 250 event to compete in his first tournament since June. The 26 year old didn’t lose a single set on his way to the title which was his first of the season.

Speaking after the match, Medvedev said “Every match was very good, but the final is always special. In the final you play the best player of this week, so it's always a high-level match and I'm really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match. It was not easy. Cam is an amazing player, so it was really intense. When you play against Cam, you know that you have to fight for every point. Actually bleeding helped me I think a little bit so I could hold my nerve a little bit more. Since then I just managed to play good and it was enough today."

Norrie said: "I fought as hard as I could, but Daniil was too good. Well done to you and your team. You definitely deserve it this week. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for supporting me. I love playing in Mexico and that is the reason why I came back. I really feel good here."

Ranked 12th in the world, Medvedev faced last year’s champion Cameron Norrie, hoping to get a positive result in the final. The 26 year old had lost five consecutive finals going all the way back to the Paris Masters in November and he also lost in the ATP Finals last year. He then lost the Australian Open finals at the beginning of 2022 and then lost championship matches on grass in the Netherlands and Germany. As for Norrie, the British tennis player was going into the match with the expectation of defending his title and win his third ATP title of the year.
