Teams Earn a Spot in the Round of 16 Champions League

The excitement is still growing as the Champions League’s redesigned league phase draws to a close. With big stakes for clubs in their final matches, UEFA’s creative concept has made this year’s championship an exciting spectacle.

Right now, all 32 teams are vying for spots in the league table, and the top eight teams advance straight to the Round of 16. Teams who place ninth through twenty-fourth will play in the playoffs to earn a position in the knockout stages among the best players.

With a fantastic 2-1 victory over Lille this week, Liverpool was the first to guarantee their spot, keeping a perfect record of seven victories from seven games. Liverpool will be seeded in the draw for the round of sixteen if they place in the top eight, avoiding a potentially taxing two-leg playoff.

The powerful Barcelona, who secured their place in the top eight with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Benfica, has joined Liverpool. The Catalans attempted to win their first Champions League trophy in ten years by pulling off a stunning comeback to overcome a 4-2 deficit.

Furthermore, 16 teams have guaranteed their spot in the knockout stages, guaranteeing they won’t be able to fall to the playoff spots. Since neither Arsenal nor Inter Milan can finish worse than 16th, they are at least guaranteed a seed in the playoff draw. To guarantee a direct path to the Round of 16, both teams will just need to earn a point from their remaining games.

Celtic has joined the battle after defeating Young Boys 1-0 to secure their postseason berth. Since the 2012–13 season, this is the first time the Scottish champions have made it to the Champions League knockout stages. Furthermore, rookies Brest, Aston Villa, and Feyenoord have all guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.

In the meantime, Manchester City, who are now narrowly outside the qualifying spots, must defeat Club Brugge in their final game.

Lastly, a number of teams have already lost their chance to qualify for the playoffs. It is important to note that clubs that withdraw from the Champions League will not have access to the Europa League pathway, unlike in prior seasons.
