Romário: Brazil Can’t Win World Cup Without Neymar

Due to his ongoing recuperation from another injury sustained while playing for Al Hilal in late 2024, Neymar has not been called up.

Romário has never held back when voicing his thoughts, and in an exclusive interview with ESPN, he did not mince words. The ‘Baixinho’ talked about the BRAZIL national squad, which he won the World Cup with, among other things.

In an interview with Neymar, the former striker discussed Brazil’s prospects in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He debuted his YouTube channel, Romário TV, this Thursday (16).

He acknowledged that the club will still face difficult obstacles even with Neymar available. A title, however, would be “impossible,” in his view, without their top player.

Regarding Dorival Júnior’s work, Romário also expressed dissatisfaction with the coach’s insistence on choosing players who play in Europe while there are other good options in Brazil who may be called up.

“With Dorival in control, the first game went really well. In my opinion, it was the best team he has selected thus far. I believed he could have done better with the others. Everyone expects Brazil to play football, but they can’t. It will be challenging for Brazil to win the upcoming World Cup with Neymar. It won’t be doable without Neymar. There are talented athletes who excel at the club level, but regrettably, they haven’t been able to establish themselves at the national level,” he said.

Ninety percent of the duty is on the players. A national team’s coach is obviously crucial. Dorival’s choice of those guys that I wouldn’t pick is what worries me. Why he continues on calling players who play outside of Brazil in Europe is beyond me. He continued, “There are players here that might have the opportunity to play for the national team.

Brazil is in fifth place in the World Cup qualifiers with 18 points and won’t play again until March 20th, when they host Colombia. Notably, the top six teams advance straight to the World Cup, while the seventh-place team must compete in the playoffs.

As he recovers from another injury he suffered playing for Al Hilal in late 2024, Neymar has not yet been called up.
