Indian fencer Bhavani Devi’s journey ends at the Tokyo Olympics after defeat against Brunet in Round of 32

(Fencing news) Olympic 2021 Live Update: Despite Bhavani Devi’s journey at the Tokyo Olympics coming to an end, it seems like the beginning for her and Indian fencing after the 27 year old became the first Indian to win a fencing bout in Olympic history.

Facing World Number 3 and fourth seed Manon Brunet of France was always going to be a tough task but Bhavani Devi gave her a good fight, going into the break trailing 2-8 but collecting 5 more points in the 2nd round before eventually succumbing to a 7-15 loss.

Despite the defeat, Bhavani Devi will be written in the history books of Indian Olympics as one of the most influential athletes who started her career playing with bamboo sticks to become the first Indian in history to reach the Round of 32 in fencing.

She has not just made her Italian coach Nicola Zanotti proud with her performance, especially against Tunisia’s Ben Azizi but also the whole of India with her pioneering journey.
