Klopp’s Influence Brings Gravenberch

Under Arne Slot, Ryan Gravenberch has been nothing short of a revelation, to the point where he feels a deep bond with the player. However, his move to Liverpool was ultimately made possible by Jurgen Klopp’s persistence.

Gravenberch has already made 29 appearances this season, more than he did in his first season at Merseyside, which lasted 21 games.

The young Dutchman, who routinely holds the No. 6 spot in the Premier League and the Champions League, has grown to be a crucial component of Slot’s plan. Given that Klopp mostly used him in the No. 8 position and he seemed more of a squad player, his enormous impact on the team has surprised many.

Remarkably, Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo said that Klopp had a key role in securing the £38.5 million deal for Gravenberch from Bayern Munich. The manager was convinced that acquiring the gifted midfield player was crucial and not just an optional addition, even though Liverpool had already acquired three midfielders: Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister.

Klopp spoke openly with the club’s management and used his tremendous clout to convince Fenway Sports Group and their president, Mike Gordon, to provide the money required for the transfer.

Klopp’s position might have been called into question by Gravenberch’s playing time, since he finished 18th in minutes played last season despite missing just nine games. However, it seems Klopp has been successful in creating the conditions for Slot to now fully utilize the 22-year-old midfielder, who has emerged as a vital member of Liverpool’s squad.

Furthermore, Gravenberch has been a target for Liverpool for a number of years. When he was just 13 years old, the club saw him for the first time at an Ajax youth game.

The young player playing for Ajax U16s, three age groups older than his true age, against PSG Eindhoven was spotted by Matt Newberry, who was a youth scout at the time and is currently the director of global talent. In the years that followed, the recruitment team continuously tracked Gravenberch’s progress under the direction of former top scout Barry Hunter and former head of recruitment Dave Fallows.

Liverpool had so painstakingly prepared the way for the transfer of a player who was now fully realizing his potential, even though Klopp’s forceful intervention was essential in completing the deal.
