The 36-year-old former Stroke City defender and Wales national team player James Chester has formally confirmed his retirement from professional football.

Chester, who ended his playing career with Salford City, started his career at Manchester United but only made one appearance during his brief tenure. He earned a total of 35 caps for Wales during his career, playing for teams including Hull City, West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, and Stoke City. Notably, he was a key member of the Welsh team that advanced to the Euro 2016 semifinals.

Chester reflected on his 18-year career as a professional football player, in which he participated in more than 500 games, in an emotional Instagram post: “After 18 years as a professional footballer and over 500 games, the time has come for me to announce my retirement.” It’s been a tremendous ride, he continued, “with incredible teammates, outstanding staff, and unwavering support at every club I’ve played for. I’m very pleased of everything I’ve accomplished in the game, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.” Chester stated that he wants to keep learning about the diverse world of football and that he will stay with Salford City until the end of the current campaign. He said, “Thank you all for everything,” in closing.

After moving from West Bromwich Albion for an estimated £8 million in August 2016, Chester had a successful four-year stint with Aston Villa, which coincided with Villa’s title run. He made 28 appearances during the season when Villa earned promotion to the Premier League, demonstrating his vital role under manager Steve Bruce. To improve his chances before Euro 2020, Chester was loaned to Stoke City after rejoining the top level.

Chester impressed with his efforts and helped the Potters finish in 14th position, earning him a one-year contract under manager Michael O’Neill. Despite playing less the next season, he made 71 appearances for Stoke City before being released in the summer of 2022. Chester’s career-long contributions and perseverance have had a lasting impact on the teams he played for.
