Team USA claim biggest win in modern Ryder Cup era with dominant 19-9 result at Whistling Straits

(Golf news) Steve Stricker’s Team USA utterly dominated the proceedings at the Ryder Cup as Padraig Harrington's European team suffered the heaviest defeat in Ryder Cup history. With a six point advantage heading into the final day in Wisconsin, Team USA required just 3.5 points to regain their trophy and a dominant performance saw them secure a second consecutive home victory.

Team Europe needed a miracle and were constantly the second best side throughout the contest. Rory McIlroy led Team Europe for the opening match of the third consecutive Ryder Cup and was the only highlight in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Europe. Patrick Cantlay sealed his unbeaten debut by seeing off Shane Lowry 4&2 while Scottie Scheffler inflicted the first defeat by despatching world number 1 Jon Rahm.

Sergio Garcia’s 100% record was ended by Bryson DeChambeau with a 3&2 win that all but assured a victory for Team USA while Collin Morikawa’s half point against Viktor Hovland ensured that the trophy will be retained by the hosts. Dustin Johnson narrowly won against Paul Casey to become the first American to win all five of his matches since Larry Nelson in 1979. Ian Poulter maintained his unbeaten record by defeating Tony Finau 3 & 2 while Lee Westwood added another point for Europe by winning two of his last three holes against Harris English.

By winning with a margin of 10 points, it’s the biggest victory since players from Continental Europe began competing in the Ryder Cup in 1979. The result breaks the previous record of 18.5-9.5 by the USA in 1981 and Europe in 2004 and 2006.
