(Cricket News) Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India, recently revealed that the board was caught off guard by Virat Kohli’s personal decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. Ganguly’s comments come in response to fans demanding the reinstatement of Kohli as the Test captain, following India’s loss to Australia by 209 runs in the World Test Championship final, led by Rohit Sharma.

In an effort to advocate for Virat Kohli’s reinstatement as the captain of the Indian cricket team, fans have taken to social media to share detailed statistics about his performance as captain. Notably, Kohli concluded his tenure as the fourth-most successful Test captain in history, having achieved 40 victories and 11 draws in 68 matches. In terms of win percentage, he ranks third among all 28 Test captains who have led a team in 40 or more matches, with a percentage of 50%.

Speaking exclusively to Aaj Tak in an interview, Sourav Ganguly acknowledged that the BCCI was unprepared for Kohli’s departure from the Test captaincy. The decision came as a surprise, especially after the South Africa tour. However, Ganguly emphasized that only Kohli himself can disclose the reasons behind his choice. Given that Kohli stepped down, the focus now lies on the appointment of a new India captain, with Rohit Sharma being the preferred choice at that time, according to Ganguly.

In earlier parts of 2021, the decision made by the BCCI to replace Virat Kohli as the captain of the Indian cricket team for One Day Internationals (ODIs) created a lot of speculation and controversy. Despite Kohli expressing his intention to continue in the role, the board decided otherwise, leading to questions about his relationship with the BCCI and Sourav Ganguly.

Prior to this, Kohli had already resigned as the captain of the T20I team ahead of the T20 World Cup in October. However, the situation escalated when he was subsequently removed as the ODI captain before the South Africa tour in December. This series of events resulted in a direct confrontation between Kohli and BCCI chairman Sourav Ganguly, as conflicting accounts emerged regarding the T20 captaincy decision and the manner in which Kohli was informed of his removal as the ODI captain during a routine call with the selectors.

On January 16, 2022, Kohli’s captaincy journey took an unexpected turn when he decided to step down as the Test captain, less than 24 hours after India lost the series in South Africa. This marked the end of a prolonged battle between Kohli and the Indian cricket board, encompassing disagreements over the manner, timing, and narratives surrounding the conclusion of his T20 and ODI captaincy tenures between October and December of the previous year.
