Women’s Super League: Chelsea run riot against City while Manchester United are held to a draw against Everton

(Football news) The reigning Women’s Super League champions Chelsea moved within a point of league leaders Arsenal after a 4-0 victory over Manchester City at the City Football Academy. The visitors had an ideal start when Jessie Fleming scored in the 2nd minute after a mix up between City goalkeeper Karima Taieb and Georgia Stanway. Though the hosts put pressure on the in-form Chelsea side, it was the Blues who doubled the scoring in the stoppage time of the first half through Samantha Kerr who scored her sixth WSL goal of the season so far.

Things got bad to worse for City in the second half when Fran Kirby scored Chelsea’s third, seven minutes into the second half with a magnificent curling effort into the second half. If that wasn’t all, the Blues added a fourth because of Magdalena Eriksson’s header in the 55th minute, ensuring that the visitors won their first ever game at City Football Academy while the home side continued their poor form which has seen three consecutive losses and are now ninth in the Women’s Super League table.

In other results, Manchester United Women were held to a 1-1 draw against Everton at Walton Hall Park. The Red Devils went ahead just 10 minutes after kick off through Ella Toone through a well worked team goal that began from a counter attack. Vilde Boe Risa began the move after Everton’s attack broke down, releasing Martha Thomas who passed it to Toone, the England international doing brilliantly to slot the ball into the bottom right corner. The Red Devils dominated most of the first half despite Everton’s Claire Emslie hitting the bar just before the break.

However, it was the home side that began the second half with some renewed vigour which eventually paid dividends 14 minutes from time when Simone Magill found the back of the net after a mix-up with the Man Utd defense. With this result, Everton are now 10th in the Women’s Super League table under new manager Jean-Luc Vasseur while Manchester United under Marc Skinner maintain fifth place.
