Three things Ralf Rangnick needs to do at Manchester United in his consultancy role after the end of the interim period

(Football news) With Ole not at the wheel, Manchester United have taken a major step towards their rebuild as Ralf Rangnick will not only manage them for 6 months but also help the club to rectify the mistakes they have committed over the last 10 years. The job of an interim manager is no doubt tough but for him the actual task would be to get the club back to its glory days. The Manchester United board over the past ten years have become a laughing stock with terrible decision making but with Rangnick’s capability there is some hope for the Manchester United fans.

1) Needs to appoint a manager that suits his philosophy

Ralf Rangnick as a manager is described as the father of gegenpressing, he along with John Murtough and Darren Fletcher need to first identify a manager who not only gets the most out the team but also instills a certain style of football. Over the years Manchester United have had so many managers that the club has lost their identity and lacks a certain footballing philosophy. Ralf Rangnick will arguably need to put all the inputs and footballing experience as he has to identify a manager who can not only coexist with his inputs but also play an entertaining brand of football, something that the Old Trafford crowds have been missing.

2) Rectify the recruitment policies

Manchester United’s recruitment over the years has been somewhat shambolic, they tend to overpay and offer exorbitant wages to fringe players. The very fact that United purchased Pogba for 100 million and risk losing him for free next season, speaks volumes of the board’s incompetency. Rangnick on the other hand is an expert at identifying young world class players and purchasing them at a very cheap price, especially during his time at Red Bull Sports Group where he signed the likes of Sadio Mane and Erling Haaland for RB Salzburg and Timo Werner for RB Leipzig. He also needs to get rid of the “deadwood” who are earning staggering salaries from the club.

3) Exercise his free reign to lead the club in a manner he sees fit

The problem that a lot of previous managers have experienced at the club is that the owners don’t give the full liberty to instill their influence on the squad. Sometimes the managers have  had their hands tied as they were not given free rein in the club matters. Rangnick on other hand is a man who tends to treat the club like a project and he doesn’t like to fail. This can only be possible if the club owners give him the liberty to lead the club the way he wants to. He also needs to work with John Murtough and Darren Fletcher without much dispute and interference. Although the primary reason behind United's choice of Rangnick is to improve results in the short-term and get the club moving in the right direction on the pitch again, his arrival certainly in the long-term is likely to have huge benefits for the club's overall infrastructure.
