(Football news) England manager Gareth Southgate has called up Roma’s Tammy Abraham, who has scored four goals in 10 appearances since joining Roma and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell as a replacement for teammate Reece James who is currently recovering from an ankle injury.

With a two week international break currently underway, both Abraham and Chilwell have been selected for England’s upcoming matches against Andorra and Hungary. England already boast a formidable attack comprising Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins, Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling but Abraham’s form in the Serie A has justified his selection with the 24 year old being called up for the first time since November 2020. The Roma striker has one goal in six international caps for England, having made his debut in 2017.

Ben Chilwell replaces Chelsea team mate Reece James in the England squad. James suffered an ankle injury against Manchester City and has missed Chelsea’s match against Juventus and Southampton. Harry Maguire is also absent from England’s squad after limping out of Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa. Solskjaer has confirmed that the defender is recovering from a calf injury and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.

Gareth Southgate is expecting goals from the most expensive player in England’s set up – Jack Grealish, who currently has 15 caps after making his senior debut in September 2020. Southgate said “I think he recognised with us we asked certain things of him, in terms of when he first joined us, the pressing. I think the big challenge with us is he's 15 games without a goal, so the big challenge is to start registering those numbers that our other wide players have been able to produce over a period of time. There's no reason he can't do that.

"He's physically definitely in a better place. He's able to play the midweek games now. When we had him at the end of the season, he was only able to train two days in every three, so a completely different situation to the European Championships, that's for sure."

England will face Andorra on 9th October followed by Hungary at the Wembley Stadium three days later. The Three Lions currently have 16 points from six games and are currently on top of Group I.
