Son inspires Tottenham win; Ronaldo brace helps Manchester United defeat Arsenal in a 5 goal thriller

(Football news) Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur got important victories. Spurs are now 2 points behind 4th placed West Ham with a game in hand. United on the other hand are 7th on the table. Arsenal stayed in 5th spot while newly promoted Brentford are 12th.

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back after their Conference League defeat against Mura last week with a confident home win against Brentford. The away side had the majority of the possession but didn't create any major goal scoring opportunities throughout the 90 minutes. Tottenham were lucky to get the early goal after some brilliant work by Son Heung-min that forced an own goal off Sergi Canos. The South Korean doubled Spurs' lead 20 minutes into the 2nd half after an outstanding delivery by Sergio Reguilon. Spurs play relegation threatened Norwich on Sunday. A victory could take them into the top 4 with a game in hand which will be a massive boost for Antonio Conte.

Manchester United and Arsenal rolled back the years with a classic Premier League clash. The 5 goal thriller ended 3-2 in favour of the Red Devils. The game unlike the legendary clashes between the two giants wasn't about top quality football. At least 3 of the 5 goals came after defensive errors. The opening goal was one of the most bizarre ones in Premier League history. The goal came after an Arsenal corner that fell to Emile Smith-Rowe who shot towards goal. David De Gea by that time was already on the floor after a Fred stamped on his foot. The referee initially didn't give the goal but the goal stood after VAR consultation. The referee only blew his whistle after the ball had gone in. Had he done so before that the goal would've been incorrectly ruled out. Arsenal decided to sit back and paid the price as Fred set up Bruno Fernandes for the equaliser just before half time.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave United the lead in the 52nd minute after Marcus Rashford ran into space left behind by the bombarding Nuno Tavares. The goal was Ronaldo's 800th official senior goal for club and country but Arsenal equalised in no time as Emile Smith-Rowe scored a goal almost identical to that of his former teammate Ronaldo. He then wiped out his goal as he gave away a silly penalty after taking down Fred with an attempted slide tackle as he got nowhere near the ball. Ronaldo stepped up to power the penalty down the middle.

Arsenal dominated possession in the final minutes in search of an equaliser but couldn't create a clear cut chance. Senior Arsenal players Thomas Partey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had little or no positive impact on the game which gives Mikel Arteta a headache ahead of their trip to Everton. Michael Carrick after the game announced his decision to part ways with Manchester United after 15 years at the club first as a player and then as a part of the backroom staff and eventually as caretaker manager. New manager Ralf Rangnick will take charge of Manchester United from their next game against Crystal Palace.
