(Football news) Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez is set to complete a shocking move to the Premier League champions Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side have agreed a fee in excess of €15m (£12.7m) for the signing of Gomez, who will subsequently replace Oleksandr Zinchenko at the Etihad. The 21-year-old came through the youth academies of both Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund before joining Anderlecht last summer, where he enjoyed a very strong debut season in Belgium.

Gomez netted seven goals and 15 assists from 49 appearances in all competitions in an Anderlecht shirt. Last season he had 12 goals in the Jupiler Pro League, which attracted the attention of the major European clubs. The Spanish Under-21 international, who has five goals and six assists from eight appearances for his nation from a more advanced position. He still has three years left to run on his Anderlecht deal but is seemingly set to leave the club just 12 months after arriving. Gomez will complete the formalities of his Man City move as he undergoes his medical and signs his contract with the Citizens.

Gomez would hope to immediately establish a place in Man City's first-team squad, but it seems that he could potentially be loaned out to Girona for the remainder of the season. With Benjamin Mendy still suspended and Zinchenko leaving the club to join Arsenal as Joao Cancelo has deputised well at left-back for the Citizens, who have also utilised Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte in the left back role. With Gomez they could get a more recognised option in that area, and the Spaniard's versatility has also seen him feature on the wing and in the midfield during his career. The former Huesca loanee only made three senior appearances for Dortmund after leaving Barcelona in January 2018 and he has gone on to win both the Under-17 and Under-19 European Championships with Spain.

Even if a deal for Gomez is wrapped up imminently, according to reports City will still be on the hunt for another left-back after losing out on Marc Cucurella. Borussia Dortmund's Raphael Guerreiro has been another name linked with a move to the Etihad in recent days, and the report also states that a loan exit is the most likely option for Gomez. Portugal international Guerreiro has entered the final year of his contract with Dortmund and is the leading prospect of a cut-price deal before he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Anderlecht's Gomez is set to become City's fourth summer signing following Kalvin Phillips, Stefan Ortega and Erling Braut Haaland. Guardiola will now aim to make it two for two in the 2022-23 Premier League season when they take on newly-promoted Bournemouth at Etihad on Saturday.
