SC East Bengal break the winless streak with three points against FC Goa

(Football news) Indian Super League club SC East Bengal ended their 347 days winless streak with a 2-1 win over FC Goa at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on Wednesday. The win lifted SCEB from the bottom of the table while the Gaurs remain in ninth place in the league. Despite FC Goa’s dominance at the beginning of the match, Mahesh Naorem Singh scored for SC East Bengal against the run of play in the ninth minute. However, Alberto Noguera equalized in the 37th minute to get his side back into the game but Naorem Singh scored his second goal in the 42nd minute which eventually gifted SCEB the three points.

FC Goa dominated possession right from kick off but were dealt with a blow when Anwar Ali was caught off-guard by Edu Garcia and Mahesh Naorem Singh took advantage of the situation by pouncing on the ball and finding the back of the net. Before the half hour mark, Edu Bedia provided a through ball to Alexander Jesuraj but the latter failed to hit the target. After the drinks break, Darren Sidoel took a long range effort but his attempt went wide off the mark but FC Goa equalized soon after when Jorge Ortiz provided a defense splitting pass to Alberto Noguera who beat Arindam Bhattacharja with a left footed shot from a narrow angle.

Three minutes before half-time, Naorem Singh gave SC East Bengal the lead once again after being gifted the ball by Anwar Ali in the opposition’s box. Despite the fact that the ball struck the bar and came out, the goal was awarded by the referee as the ball had crossed the goalline. FC Goa were determined to get the equalizer in the second half but failed to create many clear-cut opportunities. The Red & Gold Brigade denied any space to FC Goa’s attackers and defended in numbers to ensure they would secure the three points and despite seven minutes of added time being added by the fourth official, Mario Rivera’s team held on to their lead for their first win of the season.

FC Goa will face Bengaluru FC in their next match at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on Sunday, 23rd January while SC East Bengal will take on Hyderabad FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Monday, 24th January.
