Real Madrid go 8 points clear while Barcelona and Atlético enter top 4

(Football news) La Liga is now reaching its final stage of the last 10 games. Real Madrid have extended their lead at the top of the table to 8 points. Barcelona jumped to 3rd place while Atletico Madrid reclaimed their 4th position. Karim Benzema in this match week also became the highest assist provider in the league and also extended his lead as top goalscorer.

Real Madrid came back from a goal down to win 4-1 against Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos conceded very early in the 10th minute after Dani Carvajal fouled David Silva in the box and the penalty was converted by Mikel Oyarzabal. Real Madrid were pressing very high up as La Real struggled to play from the back. Towards the end of the half, Real Madrid scored two long shots in 3 minutes via Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric to get a 2-1 lead in no time. The second half was completely one sided as substitute Marco Asensio added a third goal before Vinicius Jr won a penalty for Karim Benzema to convert. Benzema also had two goals which were ruled out for marginal offside calls. Real Madrid's tactics worked really well and they looked prepared for the PSG game on Wednesday. The high press is something which was new and could have been used as a preparation for the UCL game. Madrid are now 8 points clear and have regained their form after a short stumble.

Barcelona scored two second half goals to win 2-1 away at Elche. The first half was evenly balanced with both sides getting chances to take the lead. It was Fidel Chaves who broke the deadlock in the 44th minute after a misplaced pass by Pedri. Barcelona took control in the second half after Ferran Torres was subbed in at the break. Torres scored the equaliser after being set up by Jordi Alba. In the 84th minute, Barcelona were awarded a controversial penalty for a handball which substitute Memphis Depay converted to give Barcelona 3 points. They are now 3rd on the League table and now show shades of the old Barcelona in some ways. Xavi will now turn his focus on the Europa League game against Galatasaray.

Atletico Madrid got a hard fought 3-1 against Real Betis to re enter the top 4. Joao Felix scored in the 2nd minute to give Atletico the lead. Betis had a large chunk of possession before finally equalising in the 5th minute of the first half injury time. The Rojiblancos then turned the heat up in the 2nd half as Felix scored his second of the game before two substitutes Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Lemar combined to secure the 3 points. The win puts a 3 point gap between Atletico Madrid and Betis in the top 4 race.
