Real Madrid brush aside Osasuna; Granada hold Atletico Madrid

(Football news) Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 3-1 at the El Sadar stadium to go one step closer to the La Liga title. Carlo Ancelotti rested Luka Modric while Toni Kroos only played 20 minutes. David Alaba gave Real Madrid the lead in the 12th minute from a free-kick routine which went in after some pinball in the box. Osasuna scored immediately from kickoff as Chimy Avila set up Ante Budimir. Los Blancos scored again just before half time after Eduardo Camavinga played an amazing chipped through ball for Dani Ceballos whose shot was saved by the keeper but Marco Asensio scored.

Vinicius Jr was brought on for the last two minutes of the game and the Brazilian assisted Lucas Vazquez to seal the 3 points. Real Madrid now need 4 points to clinch their 35th league title. The bad news for them was that David Alaba picked up an injury and was subbed off at half time. Real Madrid could be in deep trouble going into the match against Manchester City with the availability of Alaba, Marcelo, Ferland Mendy and Casemiro in doubt.  On top of that both Eder Militao and Nacho will be suspended for the club’s next league game against Espanyol. Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping for some good news so that he can field his best XI against City.

Atletico Madrid were held to a goalless draw at the Wanda Metropolitano by 17th placed Granada. Diego Simeone handed 19 year old Javier Serrano his first start in senior football. The presence of the injured Joao Felix and Thomas Lemar was clearly felt in the game as Atleti could only manage 1 shot on target. Simeone started with a 3-5-2 formation but had to switch to a back 4 at half time. Atletico Madrid were much better in the 2nd half but still didn't create any clear cut chances. The point from the draw takes the Rojiblancos to 2nd place but Sevilla have one game in hand while Barcelona still have two. Finishing 2nd this season is important for Sevilla, Barcelona and Atlético as the 2nd placed team will play in the Spanish Super Cup next season.
