RB Leipzig re-sign Timo Werner from Chelsea for £25.3m

(Football news) According to Sky in Germany, RB Leipzig have re-signed Timo Werner for a fee of £25.3m (€30m) plus bonuses and the 26 year old is set to travel back to his home country this week to finalise the deal. The player was initially expected to return to Leipzig on a season long loan with an option to buy but talks between the two clubs reached a stage where a permanent transfer was agreed.

Werner is keen to return to Leipzig in order to get regular playing time and make it to Germany’s squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year. Moreover, his relationship with Thomas Tuchel is said to be strained but the manager has been reluctant to see the forward leave. Werner has scored 23 goals in 89 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea but has struggled to get regular game time, starting only 15 Premier League games last season and scoring four goals.

RB Leipzig boss Oliver Mintzlaff said “He is an interesting player. We're dealing with it. I can't say yet whether it will happen." The player was left out of Chelsea’s squad against Everton as his transfer to Leipzig was on the verge of being finalised and a move could benefit both parties as long as Chelsea find a striker this month. With the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, the Blues desperately need reliable goalscorers for the season ahead and will look to reinvest the transfer fee received for Werner for a new option.
