Premier League: Dominant Chelsea brush aside Spurs as Liverpool and Arsenal gain three points

(Football news) European champions Chelsea showed exactly why they are the title favourites in the Premier League with a ruthless performance against Tottenham. The two sides failed to break the deadlock in the first half but Thomas Tuchel’s men took charge when Thiago Silva headed in Marcos Alonso’s corner shortly after the break. N’Golo Kante doubled the lead for the Blues with a long range effort that deflected off Eric Dier in a game of two halves.

With three points all but assured, Rudiger extended the lead to three in stoppage time to bring Chelsea on top of the Premier League table. Tottenham will be disappointed by the result, especially considering Heung-Min Son, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso were back in the side and have now lost 3-0 back to back, with the same result against Crystal Palace last week.

Meanwhile at Anfield, Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace 3-0 with Sadio Mane scoring his 100th goal for the Reds while goals from Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita extended the scoreline. Mane opened the scoring for Liverpool, pouncing on a rebound from Salah’s header to become the only player in Premier League history to score on nine consecutive occasions against an opposition side. Salah doubled the lead from a corner and Keita’s stunning volley sealed Liverpool’s victory in the 89th minute. With this result, Liverpool are level on points with Chelsea and Manchester United at the top of the Premier League, but the Blues are ahead on goal difference.

Manchester City endured a disappointing performance against Southampton which saw the Premier League champions record only one shot on target. In fact, Southampton were unlucky to be a goal up as the Saints were denied a penalty in the second half as the pitchside monitor overturned the decision along with Kyle Walker’s red card. Southampton displayed a resilient performance and both sides were forced to share points, despite Raheem Sterling finding the back of the net, which was deemed offside by VAR.

Arsenal’s fortunes seem to be improving as the Gunners registered back to back victories after a 1-0 win against Burnley, thanks to a freekick goal by Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian scored his second Premier League goal at the half hour mark while Burnley lost their fourth game in five matches. The Clarets were frustrated when Aaron Ramsdale tripped Matej Vydra and were awarded a penalty by referee Anthony Taylor, only for the decision to be overturned by VAR. With this victory, Arsenal are 12th in the Premier League and look to have found their momentum after losing their first three games.
