Maurizio Sarri is expected to sign a contract extension till 2025 for Lazio

(Football news) Maurizio Sarri has reportedly reached an agreement with President Claudio Lotito to stay at Lazio till 2025, but he expects the club to invest in the transfer market. Sarri, who arrived at the Olimpico ahead of 2021-22 season is expected to pen a new deal until June 2025 with the club or a deal until June 2024 with an option for a further year extension. The former Scudetto and Europa League winner with Juventus and Chelsea has been assigned the task to bring back the glory days and finally compete in the forefront for Lazio.

Sarri’s current contract costs around €11 million gross on the budget  around €6 million net in the two-year period and with the renewal, the figures would rise past €20 million gross in total. Claudio Lotito wants Sarri to instill his playing philosophy in the team as he believes in his capability and experience. The first thing promised by him is to invest in the squad, the Lazio squad lacks quality and it is not upto the standards of the big teams in Serie A. Although having a weakened squad Lazio have produced clinical performances against the likes of Inter and AS Roma.

Lazio are currently 8th in Serie A and are 10 points behind Atalanta at fourth, as the coach has  targeted some players in the transfer market. According to reports in Italy, he is looking for a new full-back, goalkeeper and a striker to support Ciro Immobile. Sarri would like to instill his playing style in Lazio but he hasn’t been able to do that, mostly because he hasn’t got the right personnel in the team. This season, Lazio are having a topsy turvy start as they have lost five matches and won six matches only, as they currently have 21 points from 15 matches.

Maurizio Sarri when asked about his contract extension said, “I always want to win games, However, the difficulties are evident. In the three games after the national break, we scored three points. We also scored a few points after the Europa League. If you look at normal games, on the other hand, we have a very high average. It’s not an easy problem in today’s football, because unlike in the past, we always play every three days. It’s not a tactical problem, but a mental and unconscious problem. The nervous system is discharged.

“On Sunday, we already knew we were going to lose during the warm-up. It was evident. It gave me a sense of frustration. You need to have clear ideas. Liverpool didn’t win immediately with Klopp. The first year they finished 11th and eighth in the second. We need a broader view. I’m not Klopp, that’s clear. The problem is not tactical. The team is passive, and you lose, tactics don’t matter. We need to recharge after a tiring moment and in this moment, we sometimes succeed, others not. I have never talked about names to the club,  just mentioned the needs. In my opinion, you need to sit down and plan two or three transfer markets ahead. You can’t stand in the window looking for opportunities.”
