Marco Asensio to leave Real Madrid in search of more game time

(Football news) Real Madrid have been very busy in the transfer window already, having signed Antonio Rudiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni. Los Blancos have already confirmed the departures of Marcelo, Gareth Bale and Isco for free. In addition Luka Jovic, Jesus Vallejo, Mariano Diaz and Dani Ceballos are also expected to leave the club. Another player whose future has been doubtful is Marco Asensio.

Asensio has had an average season with Real Madrid. The Spaniard has scored 11 goals this season which looks good on paper but he also provided zero assists which shows why he hasn't been up to the mark. The first thing Carlo Ancelotti did with Asensio was to change his position and make him a midfielder. It wasn't long before he had to start deploying him at right wing again. The player had a decent run of games but his performances were always underwhelming. Towards the end of the season he fell behind Fede Valverde and Rodrygo in the pecking order.

Now reports in Spain claim that his super agent Jorge Mendes is adamant on finding a new club for Asensio. Newcastle, Arsenal, Manchester United and AC Milan are some of the options. Asensio has recently shown some incredible performances with the Spanish national side under Luis Enrique who has praised the player a lot. When asked about his future in a press conference Asensio said "Would I like to continue at Real Madrid? Yes, obviously yes, but I also want to grow and have continuity throughout the year, not just 3 or 4 months.” He also said that he is keeping all 3 options open which includes leaving before next season, signing a new contract and leaving when his contract runs out in 2023.

Asensio hasn't been the player he was after his ACL injury but he is still a quality player who just needs consistency. He is versatile with the ability to play as a number 10 and on either wing. His ability to shoot from distance is something not many players possess. His decision making and vision is something which hasn't been up to the mark this season but he has shown that quality in the past. Real Madrid are likely to slap a €50 million price tag on him considering he only has 1 more year left on his contract. Jorge Mendes is an experienced negotiator and will definitely try and bring that down. Real Madrid will already be looking at replacements and Serge Gnabry is one name which has been mentioned.
