Manchester United appoint Andy O’Boyle as Deputy Football Director

(Football news) Manchester United have appointed Andy O’Boyle as the Deputy Football Director. He will be leaving his post as Head of Elite Performance at the Premier League to join the club and will support John Murtough, Football Director in order to drive the club’s strategy across the first team, Academy and women’s team. O’Boyle will be returning to Manchester United after 16 years, having previously worked in the Academy, working with players like Marcus Rashford.

Speaking about the appointment, Football Director John Murtough said “We are delighted to welcome Andy back to Manchester United to take up this important role in the club’s leadership. Andy has experience across all technical areas of football, from fitness and sports science to scouting and recruitment. This will make him a valuable addition to my team at Carrington as we continue to strengthen leadership and strategic planning across all our football activities.” 

O’Boyle said “I am thrilled to be rejoining Manchester United at such an exciting time for the club, as the first team prepares for a fresh start under Erik ten Hag, and the Academy and women’s teams go from strength to strength. Whilst it has been a privilege to serve the Premier League for the past five years, I can’t wait to get started at United and play my part in creating the right environment for football success.” O’Boyle is set to complete his UEFA Pro Licence this summer and is also working on his doctorate in Sports Science. 

His role in the Premier League involved advising clubs on talent identification and recruitment, performance analysis, sports science and medicine, psychology, and loan management. O’Boyle was also responsible for the league’s response on COVID-19, coordinating with the government and clubs on the protocols. He has played for Manchester United Centre of Excellence in Northern Ireland before switching to coaching and sports science and is a lifelong fan of the club. He has also held roles at Liverpool, England Under-21s, Coventry City and Wrexham FC.
