Manchester United aim to boost top four hopes with win over Brentford

(Football news) Manchester United are set to travel to West London to face Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium. The Red Devils are currently 7th in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth place West Ham while Brentford are 14th, 10 points clear of the relegation zone. Thomas Frank’s team have won five, drawn nine and lost ten Premier League games so far and won back-to-back games against Aston Villa and Port Vale earlier this month.

Brentford haven't defeated Manchester United since 1938 and the two sides are meeting for the first time since 1947 in a fixture that ended in a goalless draw. However, the Bees will definitely not be intimidated as they welcome the 20 times league title holders and will be looking for their seventh win of the season and their fourth at home. Manchester United are not in the best of form, having conceded two late goals for a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa but they did play well for the first 30 minutes or so in the clash. Rangnick would hope to maintain that level of performance for the entire 90 minutes as it would be the only way Manchester United can hope for a top four position this season.

Brentford will be without Julian Jeanvier, David Raya, Charlie Goode and Josh Dasilva due to injuries while Mathias Jorgensen remains doubtful. Frank Onyeka will also be unavailable due to his involvement in the African Cup of Nations but Rico Henry has recovered from his injury and is back in the squad. For Manchester United, Paul Pogba remains unavailable as he is recuperating from his thigh injury but Rangnick has confirmed that the Frenchman will be back in the squad after the international break. Eric Bailly is unavailable due to his involvement in the AFCON while Aaron Wan Bissaka is doubtful due to illness.

Cristiano Ronaldo has recovered from a hip injury and is expected to feature against Brentford while Rashford could be back in the squad after suffering from a dead leg before the match against Aston Villa. Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay are also available for selection after serving their suspension in the last match while Harry Maguire is expected to feature in the starting XI. After an impressive performance, Anthony Elanga could retain his spot against Brentford while Victor Lindelof, Alex Telles, Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani could be dropped.
