Manchester City linked to Dortmund’s left-back Raphael Guerreiro

(Football news) Having missed out on Marc Cucurella, Manchester City have now turned their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s left-back Raphael Guerreiro. The 28 year old has made 189 appearances for the German club, scoring 34 goals and providing 37 assists since his debut in 2016. The player is one of the many left-backs that the reigning champions of England have been linked to such as Alex Grimaldo, Borna Sosa and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Guerreiro is more of a wing back rather than a full back and will provide competition for Joao Cancelo if he joins.

Last month, City manager Pep Guardiola had indicated that the club are looking for a left-back this summer by saying “If it's possible (to sign a left-back), yes, if it's not we stay. Joao [Cancelo] can play there, Josh [Wilson-Esbrand], Nathan [Ake]. I never complain about the squad I have since the first season. What the club can do is the benefit for the club, not me. I support the club." Manchester City have also reached an agreement with Anderlecht for the transfer of left-back Sergio Gomez for €10m (£8.5m). The player is expected to go out on loan but Guardiola may opt for keeping him, especially if an established left-back is not signed this summer.

Dortmund may be motivated to sell Guerreiro, especially considering that the player only has 12 months remaining on his existing contract and could leave as a free agent next summer. The player’s 2021/22 campaign was marred by injuries but he still scored 5 goals and provided four assists in 28 appearances. Guerreiro has also established himself at the international stage with Portugal with 56 caps to his name. German club Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa is another left-back linked to City and the 24 year old can operate as a full back and a wing back on the left side. The Croatian has provided 18 assists in 54 appearances and is believed to be worth between €20m (£17m) and €25m (£21.2m).
