Liverpool look to apply pressure on Man City with win over Leeds United

(Football news) With Manchester City losing to Tottenham Hotspur 2-3 at the Etihad Stadium, the gap between the reigning champions and second place Liverpool can be reduced to just three points if the Reds secure a win against Leeds United at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s side recently came from behind to defeat Norwich City 3-1 while Leeds lost to Manchester United 2-4 at Elland Road on the weekend.

Klopp has already claimed that Liverpool’s match against Leeds will be the most important fixture for his side so far but the German will undoubtedly also have an eye on the EFL Cup final against Chelsea on February 27th. It will be reassuring to the Liverpool fans that the Reds have won eight consecutive games in all competitions and are the only team who are yet to lose at home this season.

As for Leeds, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently 15th in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone and have conceded 29 goals away from home, the worst record for any team in the top flight. To make matters worse, they are facing a Liverpool side that has been scoring goals for fun all season and it’s likely that Jurgen Klopp’s side will look to improve on their goal difference apart from securing the three points.

In injury news, Roberto Firmino is unavailable for selection after enduring a muscular issue before the Norwich match while Diogo Jota remains doubtful due to his ankle injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are expected to feature against Leeds after being rested in the previous match while Divock Origi could also find himself in the starting lineup.

For Leeds, Robin Koch will be unavailable for selection after being forced to be substituted due to a possible concussion against Manchester United while Sam Greenwood, Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper will also not feature. Jamie Shackleton could be brought in for Koch alongside Adam Forshaw while Raphinha is expected to be named in the starting lineup after being dropped on the bench against Manchester United. The hosts are expected to secure all three points from this fixture and reduce the gap between themselves and Manchester City to three points.
