Liverpool agree deal to sell Ben Davies to Rangers for £4m

(Football news) Liverpool defender Ben Davies is on his way to Rangers after the two clubs reached an agreement for the transfer, valued at £4m. The 26 year old played 21 Championship games for Sheffield United last season on loan and the structure of the deal will guarantee the Reds £3m with the remainder in achievable add-ons. Middlesbrough and Blackburn were also interested in Davies’ signature while Stoke and Burnley were keen to take the 26 year old on loan for a season.

Davies has not made a first team appearance for Liverpool since he signed from Preston North End in a £1.6 million deal last February. He had made 145 appearances for his boyhood club, having been at Preston’s academy. The move to Rangers is undoubtedly a positive one for both the player and the club despite serious interest from Blackburn and Middlesbrough. The Scottish club are on the verge of selling Calvin Bassey to Ajax for a fee of £18.7m (€22m) which could rise to £22.9m (€27m) with the add-ons. The player finished his medical on Sunday and will sign a four year contract with the Dutch club.

Davies’ former club Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace in Singapore in their pre-season friendly. Having been completely outclassed by Manchester United, Jurgen Klopp’s team responded positively to the setback and Jordan Henderson opened the scoring in the first half. The Reds suffered a setback as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was forced off due to a hamstring issue and Klopp made 11 changes at half-time, introducing the likes of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez. The Egyptian maestro’s deflected shot beat Vicente Guaita to secure a comfortable victory for the reigning Carabao and FA Cup winners.
