Late Courtois heroics help Real Madrid clinch the Spanish Super Cup title.

(Football news) After a trophyless season last time, Real Madrid have won their first trophy of the 2021/22 season. Los Blancos emerged victorious in the Spanish Super Cup final over defending champions Athletic Club. Real Madrid won by two goals to nil as they dominated the game throughout the 90 minutes.

David Alaba passed a late fitness test to return to the starting XI in place of Nacho. Lucas Vazquez replaced the Covid affected Dani Carvajal while Marco Asensio who suffered an injury in the Semi final was replaced by Rodrygo. Athletic club on the other hand played the same team that defeated Atlético Madrid in the Semi final.

Real Madrid were on the front foot from minute 1 as Athletic Club barely got a touch of the ball. Real Madrid were a constant threat especially down their right hand side via Rodrygo, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez played a lot of combinations. One of the combinations resulted in a goal in the 38th minute when Rodrygo set up Modric who gave Real Madrid the lead and scored his first goal of the season. Real Madrid simmered down a bit and allowed Bilbao to have some possession but the defending champions couldn't create clear cut chances.

In the 52nd minute Real Madrid were awarded a penalty after VAR deemed Yeray Alavares to have handled the ball in the box. Karim Benzema stepped up and blasted the penalty in the  bottom left corner. With a two goal lead Real Madrid were very comfortable and didn't concede many chances. Bilbao were loading up the box and crossing the ball but Los Blancos defended really well. Disaster struck in the 86th minute when the referee gave Athletic Club a penalty and sent Eder Militao off for a handball. Thankfully for Real Madrid Thibaut Courtois saved Raul Garcia's penalty to avoid them the trouble of a frantic 10 minute period.

The game ended 2-0 as Real Madrid were crowned Spanish Super Cup champions. Marcelo lifted a trophy for the first time as the club captain as he also equalized Paco Gento's record as the Real Madrid player with the most titles. The victory will give Real Madrid a lot of confidence going forward in the season. They return to action midweek in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 tie against Elche.
