Joe Rodon is going to French team Rennes FC on loan

(Football news) According to french reports, Tottenham have decided to loan out Joe Rodon to Rennes as his contract could include a purchase option. Reports over recent weeks have indicated that Spurs are going to let Rodon and Japhet Tanganga leave the club and sign another defender before the transfer window closes. It was reported earlier this month that Rodon, who since joining Tottenham has been struggling for game time and is ‘desperate’ to leave the north London club in search of regular first-team football before the World Cup.

It looks like the 24-year-old is getting his wish as Fabrizio Romano reported that the Welshman is set to join on an initial loan move to Rennes and added that the Ligue 1 club will have the option to buy the centre-back for €20m (£16.7m) next season’. L’Equipe reported that Rennes have completed the signing of Rodon who is due for his medical in France. Spurs would perhaps want an option worth more than the reported £17m figure, considering Rodon’s ceiling is high and his market value could potentially skyrocket if he has a solid season in Ligue 1 and then goes on to impress everyone in the World Cup.

Spurs signed the 24-year-old two years ago from Swansea City for a fee of £11m and are currently in the market for another defender after making a 6million profit on Joe Rodon. With Eric Dier's now an accomplished centre-back, there is little prospect of regular game time for Rodon. Spurs this season have also signed Clement Lenglet, who made 27 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season. Lenglet fell out of favour at Barcelona as he is still highly regarded and is expected to play along with Christian Romero in a three man defence. Since Conte took over Romero has been an outstanding performer and is expected to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Antonio Conte has brought in Clement Lenglet, which meant that Rodon was down the pecking order. Rodon would therefore have to bide his time on the bench and it made him depart the club. Meanwhile, the club are in conversation with Villarreal over a £17m deal for Giovani Lo Celso but the Spanish side still have to agree on the fee. Lo Celso heavily impressed Unai Emery's side as he helped the La Liga club reach the Champions League semi final. It looks like Spurs will aim to sign one more centre back after already completing six summer signings this transfer window.
