Japan will not host the FIFA Club World Cup 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

(Football news) FIFA has announced that the Club World Cup 2021, set to take place on December 9 to 19th will not be hosted in Japan due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The country was set to host the Club World Cup for the ninth time, coinciding with the JFA’s 100th anniversary celebration.

FIFA is set to announce an alternative venue shortly with Qatar being a likely destination, as they have hosted the last two editions of the Club World Cup. In a statement released by FIFA, they said “FIFA can confirm that it has been informed today by the Japan Football Association (JFA) that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hosting situation in the country, they are no longer in a position to host the FIFA Club World Cup 2021™.

FIFA would like to thank the JFA for their work and commitment and looks forward to going back to Japan in the future. Further details about an alternative host for the FIFA Club World Cup 2021 will be announced by FIFA in due course.”

The Club World Cup is usually played in late December as the champions of Europe and South America qualify directly for the semi-finals. Chelsea would be participating in the CWC this year after defeating Manchester City in the Champions League finals. The London based club will hope to win their first Club World Cup trophy this year.
