Is the Premier League being unnecessarily stubborn about the 5 subs rule?

(Football news) The Premier League is the only league in the world that allows only 3 substitutions in the game. Originally the 5 substitutions rule was introduced in all the leagues when Covid first struck. After the season, all the other leagues retained the rule whereas the Premier League decided against it.

Recently Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel and Ralf Rangnick have all come out in favour of the 5 subs rule being brought back considering the recent spike in Covid cases. The cases are in bulk as fixtures are regularly being cancelled. The workload on the players has increased muscle injuries as well. The argument made against it by Burnley manager Sean Dyche has said that the rule favours big clubs because they have much deeper benches compared to lower league teams.

Jurgen Klopp hit back saying that Burnley doesn't have European fixtures or multiple players playing regular international football. The fact is that the Premier League is the only league in the world that doesn't allow 5 substitutions as even the UEFA competitions have 5 substitutions. It is clear that the Premier League is in the minority but they do have their reasons.

Jurgen Klopp has continued his trend of criticising the hectic festive schedule every year. Other managers such as Antonio Conte and Ralf Rangnick have contradicted Klopp's comments saying that it is a tradition in England and it is what makes the Premier League more special. The likelihood is that these comments are not going to change the Premier League's decisions any time soon and the clubs will have to deal with it.
