Inter overcome Juventus in extra time to win the Coppa Italia

(Football news) Inter Milan overcame Juventus in extra time to win 4-2 and win the Coppa Italia trophy. Inter, who are still in the running to retain their Serie A title this season, started the match on the front foot as they raced into the lead after six minutes in the capital city Rome at the Stadio Olimpico and Nicolo Barella curled in a magnificent strike into the top corner to make 1-0. Juventus responded well with Serbia striker Dusan Vlahovic who was played in by Dybala was denied by a superb save from Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic in an end to end first half. In the second half, Alex Sandro drilled a low shot in after some scrappy defending from Inter as Handanovic made a meal of the shot and Juventus were level five minutes after the break.

Vlahovic then completed the comeback less than two minutes later to spark wild scenes among Juve's players and fans in Rome, but Hakan Calhanoglu expertly-converted a penalty after Lautauro Martinez was brought down in the box by Bonucci, taking the match to extra time. In extra time, Perisic took centre stage, firing his side in front once more with another penalty, this time, De Ligt brought down Edin Dezko and a VAR review deemed it to be a foul, he emphatically converted the spot kick, before putting the final nail in the coffin with a finish into the top corner, winning his team their first Coppa Italia since 2011, when current AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho was in charge.

Allegri late in the match was sent to the stands for protesting against a decision and he will become the first Juventus manager since 2011 to finish a season without having won a single trophy. For Simone Inzaghi in his first season as Inter boss, he already has two trophies under his belt now after adding the Coppa Italia to his side's Supercoppa triumph this season. The Serie A title fight is on, where AC Milan have a two-point lead over their rivals with two games to play as they look to retain their Serie A title. With this win Inter’s 11 year wait for the Coppa Italia ended as they lifted the trophy for the 8th time in their club history.

Allegri said after the match, "We just have to congratulate Inter for winning. We did not win a single trophy this season, we have to retain that anger for next season, when we must get back to winning. It was a good performance, but we fell away towards the end, there were players who were not fully fit and did all they could. It's disappointing, but we can only thank them for their efforts. We learn from these experiences. It's a pity, because we didn't get the win against Inter in Serie A and did not take our revenge this evening either. Incidents can go against you some days, in favour of others."

Inzaghi said "This team never gives up. If I ever needed a response, I got nothing but responses from this side from July to today. It's been one long whirlwind of emotions. Now we have two more Serie A matches to play and we want to end the season as well as possible”.

He added, "It is also only fair we enjoy these moments, it has been a decade since we won the Coppa Italia or the Supercoppa, so I am happy for the club, these amazing players and the fans who stuck by us from start to finish.
