Indian Super League: Bengaluru FC hold ATK Mohun Bagan in high scoring draw

(Football news) A six goal thriller between Bengaluru FC and ATK Mohun Bagan at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim ensured both sides shared the spoils with a 3-3 scoreline on Thursday evening. With six different goalscorers, the fixture provided tons of entertainment for the fans but didn’t give the desired result for the two sides as Bengaluru FC remains winless in six matches while ATK Mohun Bagan haven’t won any of their last four.

The first goal was scored in the 13th minute by ATK Mohun Bagan’s Subhasish Bose with a well placed header but Bengaluru FC levelled the scoring five minutes later when Cleiton Silva found the back of the net from the penalty spot. Bengaluru FC then maintained their momentum to get the lead in the 26th minute through Danish Farooq who scored his first Indian Super League goal. However, ATK Mohun Bagan fought back with an equalizer to make it 2-2 when Hugo Boumos scored in the 38th minute. A second half penalty around the hour mark by ATK Mohun Bagan’s Roy Krishna resulted in his team’s third goal of the match but the lead was neutralized yet again when Prince Ibara equalized in the 72nd minute, scoring his second goal of the season.

Sunil Chhetri started the match on the bench while Ashique Kuruniyan was deployed in a more offensive role. ATK Mohun Bagan started off strongly and were unlucky to have a goal disallowed for offside in the first seven minutes. Subhasish Bose gave his side the lead in the 13th minute after some sustained pressure from his side after heading the ball from a corner and guiding it past Bengaluru FC goalkeeper Gurpreet Sandhu. However, Bengaluru FC were awarded their third penalty of the campaign just a few minutes later when Liston Colaco brought down Cleiton Silva inside the box. The Brazilian calmly converted the penalty to level the scoring 1-1.

Four minutes before the hour mark, Danish Farooq scored his first Indian Super League goal with a header from Silva’s corner. After the drinks break, ATK Mohun Bagan scored against the run of play when Roy Krishna provided the assist to Hugo Boumos in the 38th minute and he slotted the ball into the back of the net with a left footed strike. Before halftime, both Ajith Kumar and Hugo Boumos received yellow cards which prompted a more cautious start from both the teams at the beginning of the second half. An infringement in the box by Prince Ibara prompted referee Crystal John to award a penalty to ATK Mohun Bagan which was duly converted by Roy Krishna in the 58th minute. However, Ibara redeemed himself 14 minutes later when his powerful header from Roshan Naorem’s corner found the back of the net.

Both teams failed to score the winner despite plenty of half chances from either side. Bengaluru FC will face Jamshedpur FC next at the Athletic Stadium on Monday while ATK Mohun Bagan will play struggling NorthEast United FC at the PJN Stadium on Tuesday.
