Germany score five past European champions Italy in the Nations League

(Football news) Italy suffered a humiliating 5-2 defeat to Germany in the UEFA Nations League. Goals from Joshua Kimmich, Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller and a brace from Timo Werner. Italy managed to score consolation goals from Wilfried Gnonto and Alessandro Bastoni but it was a bittersweet situation for Roberto Mancini’s team who have failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. The result meant that Germany became the first team since 1957 to score five goals past Italy and it was also the first time Germany defeated Italy in a competitive fixture.

At just 18 years of age, Wilfried Gnonto became Italy’s youngest ever goalscorer. The last time Italy lost a game this badly was against Yugoslavia 65 years ago when they succumbed to a 6-1 defeat in the Central European International Cup. Speaking after the match, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma said: "We are angry, there are no excuses tonight. We have to look each other in the eyes and restart in order to show that this is not the real Italy. We lacked everything tonight. We are very sorry for the fans, especially the Italians living in Germany. We all made mistakes tonight. I made a big one and I take responsibility for that."

As for Germany, the result would ease the pressure on Hansi Flick’s team who had failed to win a single match at the UEFA Nations League before facing Italy. Die Mannschaft are now unbeaten in 13 games and are now one point behind group leaders Hungary. In other results, Belgium defeated Poland 1-0 to apply pressure on the Netherlands who defeated Wales 3-2 to remain above their rivals in Group A4.
