Euro 2022: Sweden beat Switzerland after Hanna Bennison scores late

(Football news) Sweden earned a hard fought victory 2-1 over Switzerland in the Women's European Championship at Bramall Lane on Wednesday as 19-year-old Hanna Bennison came off the bench and scored the winning goal. Everton midfielder Bennison, who is subsequently the youngest player in the Sweden squad, scored a magnificent goal from the edge of the box after Switzerland had equalised through Ramona Bachmann as she cancelled out Fridolina Rolfo's opener for the Swedes.

After a quiet first half, Sweden took the deserved lead in the 53rd minute when Barcelona forward Rolfo finished off a great team move with a low shot past goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann at the near post. The Swedes' joy was short-lived as Switzerland answered back with Bachmann scoring the equaliser within two minutes. She curled a shot around goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl and into the top far corner. A goal line clearance made by defender Viola Calligaris in the 69th minute kept Switzerland in the game, but then Bennison put the final nail in the coffin when she scored the winner in the 79th minute as it was her first international goal.

Bennison fired home a thumping shot after the ball was played across the edge of the penalty area, she went on to score within 11 minutes of coming off the bench. Sweden in the final moments of the game had two goals disallowed for offside but ultimately it made no difference as they went on to celebrate their first win of this year's tournament. Sweden are now level on four points with Netherlands who beat Portugal 3-2 on Wednesday, while Switzerland is in last place in Group C with one point.
