Euro 2022: Holland Women score four past Switzerland at Bramall Lane

(Football news) Netherlands progressed into the quarter-finals of Euro 2022 after a 4-1 win over Switzerland at Bramall Lane. With the scores tied 1-1 for the majority of the match, Netherlands’ Romee Leuchter and Victoria Pelova scored three goals between them in 10 minutes to secure a vital win for Mark Parsons’ side. The result meant that Switzerland is out of the competition while Netherlands finished as runners-up in Group C and will take on France in the quarter-finals.

The Swiss were dominating proceedings in the opening 10 minutes with progressive passing and Sandy Maendly’s curling effort was saved by Daphne van Domselaar, who tipped it over the crossbar. The Netherlands had a chance of their own at the 20th minute mark through Lineth Beerensteyn’s deflected shot and the forward was then brought down by goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann but no penalty was awarded after a VAR check. Both teams continued to threaten but it was the Netherlands who found the breakthrough first due to an unfortunate own goal three minutes before half-time when Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic nodded the ball into the back of her own net from a corner.

However, Switzerland responded just four minutes later after Bachmann played Reutler through who slotted the ball into the bottom corner. They nearly had a second but Coumba Sow failed to capitalise on two excellent opportunities as goalkeeper Van Domselaar was called to action. With both teams looking for that elusive winner towards the end of the game, substitute Leuchter found the breakthrough in the 84th minute with a looping header while Pelova found the back of the net just two minutes later. To make matters worse for Switzerland, Leuchter scored again in the 90 + 5 minute to secure the victory.
