Dortmund lose to FC Koln while Frankfurt end Union unbeaten start

(Football news) Borussia Dortmund conceded two goals in three minutes and slumped to their second defeat of the season with a 3-2 loss at Cologne, missing their chance to go top of the Bundesliga table. Dortmund now face fellow struggling side Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday. They started the match in complete control and squandered a bagful of chances through Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi before Julian Brandt scored in the 31st minute to take the lead. They eased off after the break allowing FC Koln to score an equaliser from Florian Kainz into the Dortmund goal in the 53rd.

Dortmund didn’t have any time to recover as Cologne struck again three minutes later with former Dortmund player Steffen Tigges beating Nico Schlotterbeck in the air to score with a glancing header. Koln kept the pressure on, and they got the third decisive goal in the 71st when Dejan Ljubicic curled a superb shot into the far corner. Dortmund teenager Tom Rothe gave his team a lifeline when his cross took a deflection off Benno Schmitz to land in the back of the net and set up a nervous end but ultimately they could not find an equaliser. The result saw Dortmund drop to fourth in the table on 15 points, two behind leaders Union Berlin. Bayern Munich are also on 15 in third place.

Eintracht Frankfurt ended Union Berlin's unbeaten start to the season with a much deserved 2-0 home win on Saturday courtesy of Mario Gotze and Jesper Lindstrom that moved them into the top five in the Bundesliga standings. New signing Randal Kolo Muani skilfully beat Union defenders to cut back the ball to Gotze, who sent the ball into the net in the 12th minute to put the hosts ahead. Lindstrom extended Eintracht's lead to cap off a clinical first-half performance.

Lindstrom seized on Paul Jaeckel's defensive error and moved past the defender with ease to bury a smart finish past goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow three minutes before half time. Eintracht were reduced to 10 men after Kolo Muani received a second yellow card in the 68th minute but they held on for the victory thanks to goalkeeper Kevin Trapp who saved a flurry of shots at the end of the match. The Berliners was the only undefeated team left in the league but retained their place at top of the table as they are level on 17 points with Freiburg.
