Disjointed Manchester United lose to Wolves in another lackluster performance

(Football news) It’s quite telling just how far Manchester United have fallen that the last time Wolves defeated the Red Devils at Old Trafford was back in 1980. Fast forward to 42 years later and Wolves defeated a disjointed Man United 1-0 at Old Trafford and it’s fair to say they were unlucky not to have more goals. The best player for Manchester United, especially in the last few weeks has been David De Gea and the Spaniard was forced to be on top of his game, making two early saves as Wolves dominated the match from get-go. He first turned Podence’s effort around the post before stretching to send Neves’ volley over the crossbar.

Podence had another opportunity which was comfortably saved by De Gea while Manchester United’s best opportunity of the first half came when Mason Greenwood and Aaron Wan Bissaka combined on the right but the English right-back’s cross went over Ronaldo’s head. The 36 year old Portuguese was given the captain’s armband in Harry Maguire’s absence for the first time since he captained the side against Bolton Wanderers in 2008. Ronaldo almost gifted Wolves the opening goal when his poor defensive header found Marcal but Raul Jimenez’s shot went wide. The goal would not have stood even if it found the back of the net as Jimenez was offside.

Substitute Bruno Fernandes had the best chance for his side in the 67th minute when Nemanja Matic’s cross from deep in the left found the Portuguese attacking midfielder but his shot hit the underside of the crossbar before going wide. Manchester United did find the back of the net when Bruno Fernandes’ freekick from the right wing was headed home by Ronaldo but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. Wolves also hit the woodwork shortly after when Matic received a yellow card for fouling Traore just outside the box. Saiss’s freekick hit the top of the crossbar before going wide but De Gea looked in control of the situation irrespective.

The visitors finally got the breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Traore’s cross was headed away by Phil Jones but was received by Joao Moutinho who took a touch before guiding the ball past De Gea and into the back of the net. Manchester United did have an opportunity to equalize in the dying moments of the game after receiving a freekick in a dangerous position but Bruno Fernandes’ effort was saved by Jose Sa as Bruno Lage’s side got a clean sheet.
