Dani Alves leaves Barcelona after the club refuses to extend his contract

(Football news) Dani Alves has officially left Barcelona after the club did not offer him a new deal. According to reports the player wanted to continue at the club and prepare for the World Cup but the club had other plans. Unfortunately for Alves his second spell at the club was nowhere near as successful as the first one as he didn't win a single trophy in 6 months. The 38-year-old's next destination is unclear but it will have to be somewhere where he can get regular game time in order to be ready for the World Cup in Qatar.

Dani Alves' departure the last time around wasn't the best as he was pretty much forced out of the club. The Brazilian later went on to be successful with Juventus and PSG before going back to Brazil with Sao Paulo. In 2021 when Xavi became the manager Barcelona he pushed for the signing of free agent Dani Alves. The full back came in to help the club in tough times and agreed to get paid the lowest possible salary permitted by La Liga. Alves started training with the team in November but wasn't allowed to play until January. He made his 2nd Barcelona debut against Granada on 9th January.

On a personal level, Alves had a decent 3 months in Barcelona but the team struggled. Alves was left disappointed after Xavi left him out of the Europa League squad. UEFA rules state that each club is allowed to register only 3 January signings for European competition. Barcelona chose to go with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres and Adama Traore. Barcelona were subsequently eliminated by Frankfurt in the quarter finals. Barcelona's decision to let Alves go is pretty understandable as the club needs to move on and introduce new blood. Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto are likely to be the two right backs at the club next season.
